West Michigan licensed electricians — GenerLink installs for Consumers Energy and DTE homes, ice-storm ready.

About Great Lakes Electrical Group — Grand Rapids, MI

Great Lakes Electrical Group has wired backup power into West Michigan homes since 2014. Our six-person crew works across Kent, Ottawa, Kalamazoo, and Allegan counties, serving the Consumers Energy and (in the southeast corner) DTE Energy footprints. We’ve completed GenerLink installations on over six hundred homes since the device cleared for Consumers’ territory in 2016.

Lake-effect weather is the reason we exist. Every February, a line of 40-mph west wind and wet snow comes across Lake Michigan, drops ice on the overhead lines that run through the apple orchards east of Grand Rapids, and someone loses power for three days. In 2022 and 2024, that someone was a significant percentage of our service area — which is why we prioritize residential GenerLink work over commercial. When the grid is down, it’s down for everybody, but a well pump and a furnace blower are the difference between manageable and unlivable.

Every install is permitted through the local municipality, inspected, and ends with a homeowner demo on how to safely fire up a portable generator and engage the transfer switch. Most homes in the older Grand Rapids neighborhoods (Heritage Hill, East Hills) need a service upgrade before a GenerLink is viable — we handle that too, typically as a combined one-day job.

What Customers Say

★★★★★
Ice storm of February 2023. Twelve days without power. Pipes froze in the garage, lost everything in the upright freezer. Called Great Lakes in March. Had a GenerLink on the meter by April, tested with our portable. The crew was on time both days, permit cleared first inspection, done. This year's February storm? We ran a heat pump, two fridges, and the furnace on a 7500W portable. Zero drama.

★★★★★
Old Heritage Hill house, 1908 construction, the electrical was a patchwork of decades of piecemeal updates. They didn't try to upsell us on anything we didn't need — just told us what was legit, what wasn't safe, and what order to tackle it in. Ended up doing the panel upgrade first, GenerLink six months later after we'd budgeted. Honest people.

Got three quotes. Great Lakes was the most thorough site visit, the clearest written estimate, and — important for my elderly mother-in-law — the most patient walkthrough at the end. She's ninety-one and she can now fire up the generator on her own driveway if she needs to. Priceless.
